Nice start Kevyn.
I like your the color tones that you chose, as well as the theme font. It feels very "SoCal," like the stuff you see in Hollister. Furthermore, I commend the way you utilized pictures to create the California feeling. However, you could possibly get rid of the search bar at the top, bring the menus lower, so you can see all of the items in the menus. Just my $.02.
I like how you organized the gangs into separate pages, and had a separate page for the 1992 LA riots. It's a very important event to the history of both gangs. Perhaps you could also add a page about how the Crips and the Bloods influenced gangs outside of LA? I feel like the influence that the Bloods and Crips had outside of Compton is significant, and is influential for all of the gangs in the entire United States. I know that you're just focusing on the gangs inside Compton, but I feel researching and writing about its influence would be interesting too.
I also like your idea about the gang culture prevalent in several types of pop culture. However, since AP covered the hip-hop aspect, would there be any other places for pop culture to appear? I feel like examining linguistics, as well as social gestures/cues would lead you in an interesting direction.
There's nothing yet I can comment on, but I like the way that you have summaries at the top of each page. Hopefully, you can find some great primary sources.
First off, I love your theme (and your topic- very cool)!! I know you were frustrated with Weebly because it wouldn’t do the things you wanted, but it looks really good. Your website is easy to navigate, interesting, and it’s obvious you really enjoy your topic. Great job!!
-I don’t really understand the significance of the italics around violent gangs and dirty streets. Perhaps you could remove them or explain them?
-the path thing is really really cool- I like how you’re taking the reader on an interactive experience/trip. I would totally expand on this and make it like a choose your own adventure novel- perhaps your special project could be like a simulation where you can film stories and endings based on what people click!! I would totally watch that.
-I feel as if your image of LA could be more powerful than what it is now... perhaps gang members in Compton, etc.
-Here, we (comma :) ).
-We will also
do you have a specific time period in mind?
Nice page!! The image is powerful and I like how you have an origin portion.
Besides adding more detail, I would connect how WW2 brought economic decline etc to the increase of (college grads? youth? etc) to the Crips.
maybe add click down tabs to it: do an overview of the Crips and its actions on the home page, then make a click down ‘history’ tab, ‘famous members’ tab, etc.
-The “Pirus," comonly known as the “Bloods," were started by Sylvester Scott and Vincent Owens on Pirus Street in Compton. Besides the grammar edits, I would explain why they were called the bloods! Just curious: are these guys the ones with the tear tattoo?
-same thing with the click down tabs
1992 LA Riots
-seems interesting: PCE?
In Pop Culture
-cool how you linked to AP’s site (is it AP’s?). I would add some more of your stuff.. maybe include an explain everything in which you dissect a rap song etc.
Overall, great job Kevyn!! I see where you’re going with it and I can’t wait to see the final product.
I like what you've done so far with your site. I like the topic, and I think your site will prove to be really interesting and informative. I like how you divided your site into two sides that highlights the conflict between the Bloods and the Crips.
I assume you plan to add more to the history of the Crips, and it might be interesting to identify a few founding members or important members and explain how they influenced society. I also like the way you set up your "More..." page for more information on gang culture in Los Angeles. I appreciate you linking my site as well!
The style you used for your site is really effective and it matches your topic very well. The aesthetics of your site are quite pleasing, and I think you've chosen your images effectively.
One suggestion I have for your homepage is to maybe add a map that shows where Compton is relative to Los Angeles. I think you made the purpose of your site very clear, but it would help you to add your thesis to your homepage so that the reader knows what you are trying to argue through your site.
Also, I suggest that you add some other forms of media to your site to keep your reader engaged. You have solid text and great photos, but maybe add video and audio content to enhance the experience. An interview with a Crips or Bloods gang member, or a song that sets the tone of your site could make it more interesting and also more informative.
Overall you've done well with your limited progress so far, and the concept of your site seems to be laying itself out very well. I look forward to continuing to follow your progress, and I am excited to read through your final site when you are done!
